Elevation Finder

Click or tap the map to add markers and get an estimated elevation for each point. Each result also shows the latitude and longitude, and you can copy coordinates in one click while comparing different locations on an altitude map / elevation map.

Works directly in your browser.
Terrain is rendered in 3D when supported by your device.

How to use

  1. Move the map to the location you want to check.
  2. Click or tap to add a marker and read its elevation, latitude, and longitude.
  3. Add more markers to compare elevations between points.
  4. Hover a marker to see its elevation and coordinates. Use Copy coordinates in the result list or click a marker to remove it.

Notes

  • Elevation is an estimate based on terrain tile data and may vary by area.
  • Zoom in for more precise marker placement and better local detail.
  • Results are shown in meters (m).
  • Coordinates are shown in decimal degrees and can be copied with one click.

What this tool does

It queries the map terrain surface at each marker location and reports an estimated elevation, latitude, and longitude for quick comparisons and coordinate lookup.

Privacy

Markers and coordinates are handled locally in your browser. GeoDataViewer does not store or log your points.

Data source

Terrain elevation is provided by Terrarium tiles hosted on Amazon S3.

Tips

Use multiple markers to compare elevations along a route, across a ridge, or between nearby landmarks, then copy the coordinates you want to save or share.

FAQ

How do I find the elevation of a location?
Zoom and pan the elevation map to your area, then click or tap on the map to add a marker. The tools panel shows the estimated elevation plus the latitude and longitude for that point. Add more markers to compare elevations between points.
How do I remove an elevation marker?
Click a marker on the map to remove it, or use Clear markers to remove all markers at once.
Can I copy the coordinates of a point?
Yes. Every elevation result includes a Copy coordinates button so you can copy the latitude and longitude for that point with one click.
What units are used for elevation?
Elevation is shown in meters (m).
How accurate is the elevation estimate?
The result is an estimate based on terrain tiles. Accuracy varies by location, zoom level, and the underlying DEM source. For best results, zoom in and click precisely on the point you care about.
What data source is used for terrain elevation?
This page uses Amazon-hosted Terrarium elevation tiles and queries elevation directly from the map terrain surface.
Is this an altitude map or an elevation map?
Both. This tool works as an altitude map and an elevation map: you place markers on the map and read the estimated elevation plus the coordinates for each point.
What makes this elevation map different?
You can check elevation directly on a true 3D globe map with terrain enabled. Seeing the elevation query on a real 3D surface can be more intuitive than a flat 2D map, especially for mountains and ridgelines.
Is my location data stored?
No. Markers are created and handled in your browser. GeoDataViewer does not store or log your coordinates.
