Privacy Policy

Last Updated: December 19, 2025

At GeoDataViewer, we believe your data belongs to you. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information when you use our website and services. Our core philosophy is "Local-First," which fundamentally maximizes your privacy.

1. The Local-First Promise

We do not see, store, or transmit your geospatial data.

When you open a file (such as Shapefile, GeoJSON, KML, etc.) on GeoDataViewer, the processing happens entirely within your web browser. Your files are never uploaded to our servers or any cloud storage provider. The data remains on your device at all times.

2. Information We Collect

Since we do not process your file data on our servers, we collect very little information. However, like most websites, we may collect:

  • Usage Data: We may use privacy-friendly analytics tools to understand how users interact with our site (e.g., which pages are visited, load times). This data is aggregated and anonymous.
  • Device Information: Basic information about your browser type, operating system, and screen resolution to help us optimize the user interface.

3. Cookies and Local Storage

We use local storage (a browser feature) to save your preferences, such as:

  • Application settings (e.g., theme preference, last used view).
  • Recent file history (only file names/metadata are stored locally for your convenience; the actual file content is not stored).

You can clear this data at any time by clearing your browser's cache/storage.

4. Third-Party Services

We may use third-party services for specific functions:

  • Map Providers: Base maps (e.g., OpenStreetMap, Carto) are loaded from third-party servers. Your IP address and map tile requests are visible to these providers as necessary to serve the map images.
  • Hosting: Our website is hosted on a content delivery network (CDN) which logs standard web traffic information for security and performance monitoring.

5. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page.
